South Luangwa — the walking safari sanctuary

· 05.07.2026
South Luangwa National Park (9,050 km²) in eastern Zambia is where the modern walking safari was born — Norman Carr pioneered the concept in the 1950s, letting tourists explore on foot with armed rangers. Today South Luangwa has arguably Africa's highest concentration of leopards and one of the highest hippo densities anywhere. **Signature experience — walking safari:** - Small groups (max 6 walkers) - Armed ranger + scout + guide - 3-4 hours morning or afternoon - Focus on tracks, plants, insects, birds — details you miss in vehicle - Big game encounters possible but usually from safe distance - The philosophy: "You go to the bush not to hunt, but to learn." **Wildlife highlights:** **Leopards** — nightly game drives virtually guarantee sightings. South Luangwa has 8-12 leopards per 100 km² — highest known density in Africa. **Thornicroft's giraffe** — endemic subspecies (only 1,500 remain). Different from southern giraffe — irregular chocolate patches, no leg patterns. **Cookson's wildebeest** — endemic. Smaller than blue wildebeest. **Crawshay's zebra** — subspecies with narrower stripes reaching hooves. **Hippos** — Luangwa River hosts 30-50 hippos per km — world record concentration. October dry season sees them crowded into remaining pools. **Elephants** — 10,000+ population. Regularly seen swimming Luangwa River. **Big cats** — lions (multiple prides), leopards (highest density), cheetah (occasional). **Wild dogs** — increasing population, den in park. **Birds** — 400+ species. Carmine bee-eaters nest in riverbanks (August-October). **Best camps:** **Mfuwe Lodge (Bushcamp Company):** famous for elephants walking through reception. Set on lagoon. **Chinzombo (Norman Carr Safaris):** Norman Carr's son runs — highest praise ranking. Luxury. **Puku Ridge Camp:** Robin Pope Safaris. High-quality mid-luxury. **Chindeni Camp:** 4 tents only, remote. **Nsolo Camp:** intimate, walking-safari focused. **Best time:** - **June-August:** cool, dry, moderate wildlife - **September-October:** hot (35-40°C), best wildlife (concentrated at water) - **November-March:** wet season, lush, birds nesting, some camps closed - **April-May:** shoulder, green season's end **Getting there:** Lusaka to Mfuwe airport (Proflight Zambia, USD 400 return, 1h). International: Lusaka via Johannesburg, Ethiopian, Kenya Airways. Mfuwe airport 30-45 min from most camps. **Norman Carr note:** born England 1912, moved Africa 1930. Poached wild dogs & lion cubs from mothers (accidents), raised them. Became conservationist, pioneered walking safari 1950. Founded Chinzombo and Kapani Lodges. Died 1997. Zambian conservation legend. **Combine with:** Victoria Falls (Livingstone, 1h flight), Lower Zambezi National Park (canoe safaris), Kafue National Park (Zambia's largest).
